Walt Disney
Imagineering (WDI) is the creative development, master planning,
design, engineering, production, project management, and research
and development area of Disney. From "blue sky" conceptualization
to final installation, WDI is responsible for the creation of
all Disney Resorts, theme parks, and attractions; real-estate
developments and communities; regional entertainment venues; and
cyberspace/new media projects. WDI is headquartered in Glendale,
with affiliated offices and facilities in North Hollywood, California;
New York City and East Hampton, New York; Cambridge, Massachusetts;
and Celebration, Florida; as well as satellite branches at every
Disney theme park location.
In the early
1950s, Walt Disney hand-picked some of his Studio's best creative
talents to form WED Enterprises (named for Walter Elias Disney)
for the express purpose of planning, designing, and building Disneyland.
Later renamed Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), it has continually
broken new ground in the theme park industry, while expanding
the frontiers in other realms of entertainment. In May 1996, WDI
joined forces with Disney Development Company, which had established
itself as one of the world's leading real-estate development and
management organizations since its inception in 1984.
WDI has embarked
on an unprecedented menu of projects, including three completely
new Disney Theme Parks: Disney's Animal Kingdom Park at the Walt
Disney World Resort in Florida, Tokyo DisneySea in Japan, and
Disney's California Adventure, a totally new concept being developed
for The Disneyland Resort in California. In addition to its continuing
work on expansion and renovation projects for the existing Parks,
WDI is also charting new territory by partnering with other Disney
businesses on projects across the U.S.A. and around the world.
One such project, DisneyQuest, a new concept in family regional
entertainment, opened at Walt Disney World in 1998 and in Chicago
in 1999.
