When travelling to the USA, travel insurance is essential. Medical
bills can run into thousands of dollars, maybe more. Even if you're
fit and healthy now, there's no knowing what's going to happen
next, whether it be illness or accident, you must be prepared for
any event and have full travel cover.
Travel insurance not only covers medical bills, but also holiday
cancellation, flight cancellation or delay, loss of luggage and
much more.
Policies vary widely, so take some time to shop around and compare,
reading all small print and making sure it's the right policy for
you.
I'd advise against buying the travel insurance that travel agents
will try to sell you with package deals, as it's often overpriced.
There are many places to buy travel insurance these days, including
off-the-shelf at supermarkets.
Wherever you buy insurance from, if you have a pre-existing medical
condition, it must be declared. Failure to do so will result in
that condition not being covered by the policy, which could mean
very expensive medical bills if you should need treatment whilst
abroad.
When you buy your policy, read through the policy documents thoroughly
to make sure the cover is adequate, any medical conditions have
been noted, and all details and dates are correct.
Medical expenses cover should be at least £2 million, and
personal liability at least £1 million. Also check the excess
amount that may apply if you make a claim. Loss of baggage in transit
may not be included in all policies, so this is something else
you should check.
If you're going away more than once in a year, look into annual
multi-trip policies, as they are often much better value. They
may even work out cheaper than single trip policies if you're going
for more than 2 weeks.
