The various forms of disney
transport are at their busiest 8am-10:30am.
The Walt Disney World
Resort has more than 750 watercraft, 12 monorails & approx 200
buses.
Some of the WDW buses
have over 1 million miles on the clock.
The Walt Disney World
buses cover almost 9 million miles every year. That's enough to
drive around the earth (at the equator) more than six times each
week!
The ferryboats that take
guests from the TTC to the Magic Kingdom are -
"Richard Irvine" (originally "Magic Kingdom 1")
"Admiral Joe Fowler" (originally "Magic Kingdom 2")
"General Joe Potter" (originally "Kingdom Queen")
There are now 3 routes
and the ferryboat that run on Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake. The
different color routes relate to the color of the flag on the bow
of the boat. The 3 different colors are -
Gold -- services the Grand Floridian and Polynesian. The route goes
in a counter clockwise direction, so starting from MK, the route
goes MK, GF, PO and returns to MK. This route runs with park hours
and starts 1/2 hour before the park opens and until about an hour
after it closes. (1/2 before surprise mornings as well). The wait
to get a boat is usually no more than 10 min. An entire cycle is
about 20 min.
Blue -- this is the route that runs on Bay Lake. The route services
Contemporary, Wilderness Lodge and Ft Wilderness. Usually two boats
on this route unless there are boat problems and one goes clockwise
and the other goes counter clockwise. A complete cycle takes about
20 min, but with the boats going both directions, unless they both
just pulled away from your dock, you won't have more than a 10 min
wait.
Red/Green route -- This route was previously two separate routes
(the red and the green) It now is a combined route for the Wilderness
Lodge and Ft Wilderness to and from MK. There are 3 motor cruisers
(capacity 120) on this route. (Previously, two went to FW and one
went to WL.) The morning and early afternoon, the route is MK, FW,
WL. After 3pm, it switches direction and goes MK, WL, FW. These
also start about a 1/2 hour before parking opening.
Monorails
The voice on the monorail
says 'Please Stand
Clear of the Doors; Por favor mantenganse alejado de las puertas'
The monorails run at approx.
40 mph.
The monorail track costs
$1 million per mile.
In December 1989 the WDW
monorail system was refitted with all-new Mark VI trains. These
six-car trains include taller cars with redesigned interiors and
expanded standing room, increasing overall capacity by 30%.
The monorail system carries
an average weekly ridership of 150,000 passengers - more than 50,000,000
riders per year. Since the opening of WDW in 1971, the system has
carried more than a billion passengers.
The original monorail
track ran in a loop directly through the concourse of the Contemporary
Resort, to the Polynesian Resort, the Magic Kingdom gate & the
Ticket & Transportation Center. In 1982 the monorail was extended
with a four mile run to Epcot, including a scenic loop through Future
World. Today there are 14.7 miles of rail, including all spurlines.
There are 12 Mark VI monorails
currently at WDW - Blue, Red, Black, Gold, Silver, Pink, Coral,
Orange, Green, Lime, Purple, and Yellow.
There is 13.7 miles of
monorail track at WDW.
The maximum capacity of
a 6 car monorail is 364, the normal capacity is 316.
There are 124 tyres on
each six car train.
Since 1971, the total
miles logged by Walt Disney World monorail trains would be equal
to over 25 round trips to the moon. One dozen new cars were put
into service along the 14-mile beamway in 1990 as the original fleet
received a well-deserved retirement.
