Day 5 - Part 2 Ghiradelli Sundaes and 4yr old Boys
I
came to a sad realization today. We were more than halfway through
our family trip. Sniff Only 2 full days left together.
I immediately tried to shove that thought to the back of my mind.
After all, we were all enjoying Downtown Disney and there was
Ghiradelli’s ice cream to eat. No one’s going to
cry in their ice cream today!
But first ToT sis wanted to look for a bikini. It was probably a wise decision
to go bathing suit shopping BEFORE we ate gigantic sundaes. Fanlover and I decided to join her and
browse. The extra air conditioning didn’t hurt either. And then I saw
it. Hanging so peacefully on the rack were cute little t-shirts of different
colours and sizes. On the front of these T-shirt’s it read, “Drama
Queen – and lovin’ it”. How’d they know we were coming?
I must admit, I considered buying a t-shirt for each of us, but I figured that
we already show the world how dramatic we can be. Having it written on our
chests loses the mystery somehow. We ended up leaving the store empty-handed.
Goofy Guy was relieved.
Tonight was date night. ToT sis and Cocoa bil were having dinner at California
Grill and Dapper dad and Fanlover were dining at Narcoossee’s. Let the
romance begin. Goofy guy and I were taking the boys to Chef Mickey’s
for dinner. Ours may not be a typically romantic evening, although I do believe
Goofy will be there..
No doubt a lot of food was coming our way, so I wasn’t sure if I wanted
to have a Ghiradelli sundae this afternoon. I remembered that Chef Mickey’s
had all you can eat sundaes, so I passed on having a Ghiradelli sundae this
afternoon. I know, I must have been ill.
Goofy Guy and I were remaining in Disney for 3 additional days after everyone
else left for home so we figured we could use our 2 for 1 coupon later in the
trip. However, this was the only chance for everyone else, so they decided
to indulge. Big sacrifice. Our coupons were 2 for 1 or buy one and pay half
price. ToT sis and Cocoa bil decided to buy one sundae, to split between the
4 of them. With Boomer in tow, however, they should have given him his own!
Dapper dad and Fanlover decided to share one too.
Were were able to get 2 booths, one in front of the other. While Dapper dad
and Cocoa bil were getting the sundaes, we started talking about the logistics
for “date night”. I don’t think ToT sis even noticed when
the sundae arrived at their table.
But
Boomer did.
When you’re only 4, the table is pretty high when you’re
sitting down. It makes it hard to reach that luscious ice cream.
Why not stand on your seat? Heck, why not stand on the table
itself? Boomer was on a mission. ToT sis finally turned around
and was in for a shock. The Boomer she knew and loved was gone.
In his place, was a slightly mischievous little boy with chocolate
and ice cream around his mouth, on his nose, under his right eye and in his
hair. I wonder if any ice cream reached his stomach?
I think it did because of the enormous grin on his face (between bites of course).
ToT sis quickly had a couple bites herself or she was going to miss out completely.
I may not have had room for a sundae, but I certainly had room for a free sample
of the caramel chocolate squares in the Ghiradelli store. YUM! I considered
buying a box, but I think my hips were getting enough padding on this dining
plan. Oy!
We rolled out of Ghiradelli’s and got back into the vans. The plan was
to change and get ready for dinner. Our dinner at Chef Mickey’s was at
5:30pm. In order to give us a little more time before dinner, Cocoa bil offered
to drive us to the Contemporary hotel rather than have us take the bus. That
was a really nice gesture considering he’d be back at the Contemporary
in two hours for his California Grill reservation.
I
told him that we’d buy him a beer – we’d just
need to see some ID first.
Splashboy and Boomer got out of the van, hugged Cocoa bil and
ran into the hotel. I must confess that I was a little nervous
about tonight’s dinner.
You may have noticed thus far that anytime there was a bit of a meltdown by
one of the boys, Goofy Guy and I miraculously disappeared. Funny how that seemed
to always happen. Step AWAY from the building... We wanted to remain the “cool” aunt
and uncle.
But tonight, WE were the adults! Any potential tears would have to be dealt
with by US. What had we gotten ourselves into? I was sure that people would
think we were frauds. There was only one thing to do. We had to make sure the
boys remained happy all night. There'd be no crying on my watch!
We were seated within minutes of checking in. Our waiter was terrific and told
the boys that Donald Duck would remain up at the front, and would “probably
be up to no good”. Our waiter should become a stand-up comedian with
how the boys reacted to his joke. The boys thought this was hilarious! They
kept repeating it throughout the meal. They even told us that we were up to
no good. We had created monsters. We ordered chocolate milk for the boys and
they were happy. We were off to a great start.
Goofy Guy and I took the boys up to the buffet and filled their plates. If
they didn’t want many veggies, there’d be no pressure from me.
ToT sis and Cocoa bil can make them eat double tomorrow.
I’m
the “nice aunt” remember.
Throughout the meal,
Goofy Guy and I alternated between going to the buffet with the
boys and taking them to the restroom. While making our rounds,
we tried to have a few bites of food ourselves. I don’t know
how you parents find time to eat anything!
Splashboy wasn’t feeling well as his stomach was really
bothering him. Poor kid. I could tell he was struggling to keep
it together, but the tears were fighting their way up. I remembered
my vow of keeping the kids happy so I wrestled another customer
who was hugging Goofy and brought Goofy over to Splashboy. Well,
that's not exactly true.
There were 2 other customers.
Splashboy and Boomer were just as thrilled with the characters
as they had been on day one. They even got some additional
autographs by Donald Duck (who was up to no good) and Minnie
Mouse. Boomer said she was pretty cute with that big bow on
her head. Beware ToT sis and Cocoa bil – you’ve
got a young flirt on your hands.
Dessert included sundaes, Mickey Mouse straws, glow-in-the-dark
ice cubes and pop. Funny how the boys were able to eat dessert.
Hmmm. Our waiter gave us these ice cubes and straws at no extra
charge. Does anyone know if this is customary, or were we just
lucky? Goofy Guy and I had excellent non-alcoholic pina coladas
and strawberry daiquiris. Our bill was over $100 but was completely
covered on the dining plan. How on earth will we go back to normal vacations
after this one?? The boys had never been happier. Those straws and ice cubes
were the best toys these boys received all trip. You’d think they won
the lottery. I guess in a way we did. They
were all smiles as we made our way out of Chef Mickey’s
But wait! Something was missing. I didn’t feel as full as I usually do
after leaving Chef Mickey’s.
Horror of horrors, I forgot to eat dessert!
I
gave some ice cream and toppings to the boys, but neglected to
get any for myself. To think that I declined a Ghiradelli sundae
this afternoon so that I could forget dessert tonight? I wouldn’t
have believed it if I hadn’t lived through it. A bowl of
ice cream had never escaped my clutches before.
I told Splashboy to keep a look-out for a 5 legged goat on one
of the murals on the way up to the monorail. I had seen it before,
but I forgot which wall it was on. But still, I would find it
quickly and if Splashboy was having difficulty, I’d point
it out to him.
He pointed it out to me.
I’m going back to school the day I get home.
I suggested that Goofy Guy and I carry the straws and ice cubes while we take
the monorail and bus back to the hotel. I didn’t want them to lose their
new toys. The smiles quickly left
the boys’ faces.
Desperate to maintain the happy feel of the evening, I agreed to let them carry
their new toys, but I watched them like a hawk! I was remembering the whole
balloon fiasco from earlier in the trip and didn’t want a repeat performance.
A broom with masking tape on the end wouldn’t be much help this time.
We took the monorail to the Magic Kingdom where we picked up the bus to take
back to our hotel. The conversation in the bus did not veer from the topic
of superheroes, particularly Superman. You see, the glow-in-the-dark ice cubes
looked just like kryptonite. Splashboy is very inquisitive and asked us where
kryptonite came from, how strong it is, does it make Superman fly, etc.. Superman
may not be a Disney creation, but he is still magical all the same. We felt
like geniuses. We were able to answer all the boys’ questions.
I
never thought I’d say it, but Goofy Guy – thank you
for making me watch all of the Superman movies. I owe you one.
Our dinner really went amazingly well. We all had a really nice time. We hoped
that the rest of the family was enjoying their date night too. But now it was
bedtime. Would we enjoy bedtime with the same level of success we enjoyed dinner?
Ready or not, we were about to find out.
