Disney monorail suffers power failure

Walt Disney World said several riders traveling on the Florida resort's monorail system were trapped early Sunday morning due to a power failure.

The resort said in a statement that is was sorry for the inconveniences caused by the power outage and assured visitors that resort officials actively work with the Reedy Creek Improvement District in ensure visitor safety, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported.

"Our commitment to safety guides all we do, and this is the type of situation we train for with Reedy Creek," said the resort, referring to the governing jurisdiction for the resort area. "We extend our apologies to guests who were affected and are working directly with them."

The Sentinel said, citing a report by Orlando's WKMG-TV, that an unspecified number of passengers spent hours inside a powerless monorail car before being rescued.

"The monorail just shut down and came to a stop," an unidentified woman who was trapped in the monorail car said. "The lights turned off, the air conditioner turned off, and then the pilot said, 'We're experiencing technical difficulties.'"

The report gave no cause for the outage.
