Florida theme-park ride injuries include broken bones, seizures

Florida's major theme parks reported that several broken bones, a couple of seizures and a spinal injury were suffered by visitors during the first quarter of 2008.

During the three months that ended March 31, serious-injury complaints included a 50-year-old man who said he injured his neck and spine on the Mach V ride at Wet 'n Wild in January; a 28-year-old woman who suffered a seizure after riding The Incredible Hulk Coaster at Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure in February; and a 39-year-old man who had a seizure after riding Big Thunder Mountain at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in March.

Information on those incidents was released Tuesday by the Florida Bureau of Fair Ride Inspections. The theme parks are to submit such a report whenever a visitor appears to have suffered a "serious" injury on a ride -- typically defined as an injury requiring at least a day's stay in a hospital.

Other reports released Tuesday noted that a 72-year-old woman fractured her hip exiting the Mad Tea Party ride in Magic Kingdom in February; a 72-year-old woman complained of dizziness and loss of memory after riding Expedition Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom; a 32-year-old woman complained of nausea after riding Cat in the Hat at Islands of Adventure; a 71-year-old woman fractured her left shoulder while exiting The Seas With Nemo and Friends at Epcot; and a 48-year-old man fractured an ankle jumping into Cross Country Creek at Disney's Blizzard Beach.
