"We met as a group, at Tony’s Town Square Restaurant
just inside the entrance of the Magic Kingdom on your right. Once
our entire party was there, we were given special event pins as
our ‘identification’ for the event. We were led to a
corner of the restaurant and given two looooong tables. My first
thought (having worked years in the restaurant industry) was that
we were given the spot normally reserved for the ‘rowdy’
groups. Humphf. Let them just see what we are made of. :D
I popped out of the dining room and into the foyer to go grab a
menu for Joanne, and ran into “Tony,” the ‘owner
of the fine-a dining-a estab-bah-lisha-menta” in the lobby.
He was a riot, toying with the holiday objects and joking the little
girls in our party. He was not camera shy in the least, and insisted
on having his picture taken with his ‘favorite couple’
(Lady and the Tramp.) He dashed off, declaring that he ‘must-a
run-a’ and start the festivities, so we headed back to our
tables, where the food was being served by a boisterous waitstaff.
It was so wild and fun, that I forgot all about the menu I went
out to get.
The food was scrumptious. We were given platters of french toast
with fresh strawberries and blueberries, dusted with powder sugar,
and drizzled with icing, a platter of freshly baked croissants,
fruited danish, muffins, and cinnamon rolls, and I’m sure
a platter of meats, but I can’t remember that at all –
the entertainment had begun.
Tony came out singing, and started the festivities by introducing
his ‘friends.’ Goofy, Pluto, Chip, and Dale came out
dancing and encouraged us to sing. We were clapping and stomping
in no time. He announced that he would be leaving ‘to check
on-a things-a” and the characters would be around for autographs
and fun, and that we had a ‘special guest’ to meet before
we left.
We all had a ball. The characters came around shortly, and interacted
with all of us, adults and children alike, signing autographs, taking
pictures with us, etc. The servers were very attentive – so
much so that they made sure we not only had enough food to eat,
but also made sure we all participated in the festivities, as well.
We had a couple disgruntled teenagers at our table, and they tried
their hardest to bring smiles to their faces, sprinkling Mickey
‘pixie dust’ about. There were a couple of picky eaters
in our crowd, and they also did their best to make sure they were
well served.
Finally, Tony called the characters back up front to recognize
birthdays, anniversaries, and ANY special event that folks might
be celebrating. There was an anniversary, and the couple got up
and dance to ‘Bella Notte” (sp) I tried my hardest to
get my friend and her boyfriend up center stage, much to her chagrin
(she should really know better than to sit next to me by now) but
whether it was because I wasn’t loud enough, or because we
were in the rowdy section and they were ignoring us by this point,
I don’t know. At least the servers noticed, and applauded.
The servers also noticed that one of our teenagers was a bit quiet,
and tried getting her involved in the foot-stomping, hand-clapping
and general rowdiness going on all around the restaurant. She refused.
They pleaded. She refused some more. They decided to take matters
into their own hands, and *picked * her up and carried her into
an open area themselves, and ‘taught’ her how to do
the dance, pretending to collapse exhausted in the end from their
attempt to get her involved. It was downright hysterical, and made
us all laugh, including the teen. That scene definitely made for
some great memories, and fabulous photos.
Too soon, it was over. We were called out to the main waiting area,
party by party, in the order by which we entered the restaurant
that morning. Being one of the last to be seated, we were also one
of the last to leave. We were led into a back studio of the Emporium,
where a tuxedo’d Mickey waited for us to sign autographs and
for more picture taking.
Afterwards, stomachs full and sides aching from so much laughter,
we headed out into the ‘World’ to start our day.
In hindsight, I did not expect much from this experience. So much
so, that I didn’t care to book it, but the other members of
my party did, so we went along. I’m not sure what I wasn’t
expecting; I guess I viewed it as ‘just another character
meal with Mickey.’ In fact, Mickey was the least part of the
experience. The food was excellent and hot (surprising, given the
number of people there that morning), the characters great but not
‘in your face,’ and the entertainment (‘Tony’)
very funny. The service made the meal for me. They were very available,
and the extra attention they gave our group made for a lot of delightful
memories." Marion (3/05)
