A Small World" as the Convention Spotlight Shines on Disneyana

LAKE
BUENA VISTA, Fla.-Before the confetti settles on this year's convention
season, there's one more national gathering that's sure to get
a magical response from its "ConventionEars"-the Official Disneyana
Convention, Sept. 5-9, at Disney's Contemporary Resort.
The
ninth annual event, complete with its own "Speakers of the Mouse"
line-up, brings together 2,000 Disney enthusiasts from around
the country for the chance to meet Disney legends and take part
in seminars, workshops, pin-trading and auctions featuring limited
edition Disney memorabilia.
With
this year's theme of "It's A Small World," Disneyana welcomes
Academy Award-winning songwriter and creator of the "It's A Small
World" theme Richard M. Sherman, costume designer Alice Davis,
Disney Imagineering legend Harriet Burns and Marty Sklar, vice
chairman and principal creative executive for Walt Disney Imagineering.
Each
year, the general public has two opportunities to participate
in convention festivities at the Contemporary Resort: Disneyana
Auction Sept. 7 with a preview 3-7 p.m. and bidding 7-9:30 p.m.
Auction admission is $25. On Public Day, Sept. 9, 1-6 p.m., guests
are invited to bid on convention collectibles and share in the
entertainment and excitement of this one-of-a-kind event. Admission
is $10.
Convention
highlights include:
Disneyana Auction-Bids have ranged from $700 to $40,000 in previous
years for unique items such as an elephant-shaped sidecar from
the Dumbo, the Flying Elephant attraction at the Magic Kingdom.
Limited Edition Sale-Unique items created exclusively for the
convention by famous artists such as Armani, Ron Lee and Goebel,
providing a rare opportunity to obtain a signed treasure.
Antiques
and Collectibles Show-Independent collectors and galleries display
and trade artifacts ranging from the 1920s to today.
Entertainment-Exclusive
entertainment created for ConventionEars along with guest speakers
including Walt Disney Imagineers Harriet Burns, Alice Davis,
Richard Sherman and Marty Sklar.
Disneyana
Discoveries-Disney University is offering "Disney By Degrees,"
a specially designed curriculum of innovative Disney-themed
classes, exclusively to ConventionEars. (Not included in convention
price.)
The
Walt Disney Company Showcase-The largest public gathering of
Disney businesses featuring cast members of Disney's many divisions
providing updates on the latest happenings throughout the company.
A
limited number of Disneyana convention packages are still available
by calling Walt Disney World Special Events, 407/827-7600. Vacation
packages include four nights accommodations at Disney's Contemporary
Resort, unlimited admission to the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney-MGM
Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom, admission to all convention
functions and select meals. Packages start at $1,315 per person,
based on double occupancy

Disneyana Convention, Sept. 5-9 Welcomes “Speakers of the Mouse”
LAKE
BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The 2000 Official Disneyana Convention, Sept.
5-9 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, welcomes a special “Speakers
of the Mouse” line-up of Disney experts to meet, greet and answer
questions from Disneyana “ConventionEars.” From the original songwriter
and designers of It’s A Small World to experts on the Walt Disney
Company’s newest coming attraction, Disney’s California Adventure,
the “Speakers of the Mouse” program, 8:30-10 a.m. Sept. 8, unites
ConventionEars and Imagineers for unique one-to-one talks.
This
year’s line-up includes:
Richard
M. Sherman, Academy Award-winning writer of more than 150 Disney
songs for films, records and theme park attractions including
“Mary Poppins,” “The Jungle Book,” “Bedknobs and Broomsticks”
and “It’s A Small World.”
Harriet
Burns, Disney Imagineering legend, hired to paint sets and build
props for the “Mickey Mouse Club” television show, helped to
create the original models for the Sleeping Beauty Castle, completed
characters for It’s A Small World and Pirates of the Caribbean
and built many of the singing birds featured in one of Disney’s
first Audio-Animatronics® shows, “Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki
Room.”
Alice
Davis, Disney Imagineer and costume designer, was the first
costume designer to work with Disney Imagineers on designing
and dressing animated live-action figures including the 150
figures featured in It’s A Small World.
Martin
A. (Marty) Sklar, vice chairman and principal creative executive,
Walt Disney Imagineering, celebrating his 44th year at Disney,
provides creative direction for a new generation of Disney theme
parks including Disney’s California Adventure, Tokyo DisneySea
and Disney Studios at Disneyland Paris.
Barry
Braverman, senior vice president of Creative Development and
the Imagineering executive overseeing the creation of Disney’s
California Adventure.
