Biergarten (Germany, Epcot)

On October17, 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria celebrated his marriage to Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hindburghausen with one of the grandest festivals Munich had ever known. Thus began Oktoberfest tradition. For 16 days in late September and early October, millions of celebrants from around the world are drawn to Munich. Music, beer, and Gemutlichkeit flow freely in the enormous, colorful tents that crowd Theresienwiese, a fairground named after the Prince's bride.

A generous helping of hospitality makes for merry mealtimes in this jolly old restaurant featuring the best in German food and entertainment. The hearty fare is presented in an all-you-can-eat buffet. Diners sit biergarten-style at long tables that all feature a great view of the festivities. A German trio plays at lunchtime. At dinner, Bavarian musicians clad in lederhosen put on a show every hour on the half hour. Brush up on your polka skills - you may be invited to join in the fun onstage.

It's a home-cooked dining experience, with guests served from skillets and crock pots surrounded by a lively Octoberfest celebration. The chef offers seasonal vegetables such as snow peas and green beans "to change the perception that Germany is only about sauerkraut." Fresh salmon and trout in light, flavorful sauces often are on the menu.

"This was our most enjoyable meal in Disney. We were all impressed by the buffet (if you love German food - you can't miss this one.) The staff was incredibly pleasant but not intrusive. We all enjoyed the entertainment - the German band with some little surprises. The German village atmosphere was quaint and cozy. Our kids 6 - 12 all enjoyed themselves too. Buffets are best with kids - no waiting once you're seated. We had priority seating, and only waited about 10 minutes for a table for 7. Truely a fun and memorble evening out." (5/03) happy kids

"We were there in October. Watched the parade first, which was great. We had priority seating, and only had to wait a few minutes. The food was good and the entertainment was great. It was fun watching the children enjoy the show. The only problem we had was: when we were seated we asked the waitress if drinks were included and she said yes of course, all but alcoholic drinks. So we had sodas with dinner and then coffee with dessert. When the check arrived with were charged f or four drinks. The waitress said she was sorry, but the drinks were not included. Not that we minded paying for the drinks, but just that she told us different. When I mentioned this to the manager he was nice enough to remove the charges for the drinks. So beware drinks are extra. Atmosphere is wonderful." (10/01) Dottie
