The Golden Mickeys is a lively amalgam of theatrical song and dance,
animated film, video and special effects.
A salute to Walt Disney and his legacy of animation magic, this
quintessential musical features many of Disney's most famous and
infamous characters.
"We've achieved a new benchmark in cruise ship entertainment
with The Golden Mickeys," said Richard Ambrose, the show's
production manager. "Thanks to a nationally recognized director
and choreographer, and a team of award-winning designers, the show
not only sings to guests, it nearly lifts them out of their seats
and dances with them through the aisles."
The Golden Mickeys exercises the full range of technology housed
within The Walt Disney Theatre, making it the most technologically
advanced stage show at sea. Vibrant animated backdrops whisk guests
from high above Notre Dame Cathedral in one scene to inside a young
boy's toy-filled bedroom in another, and dramatic sets create a
three-dimensional illusion as films race across stage-size screens
and lighting and surround sound casually envelop the audience.

Special effects also play an important role, creating a star-lit
African night for a scene from The Lion King, an under-the-sea setting
from which an outstretched Ursula surprises unsuspecting guests
and a pixie-dusted ballroom gown that is every bit fairytale.
Although based on timeless classics, The Golden Mickeys does not
retell these big-screen stories. Instead, it uses the comedy, romance,
heroes, villains and friendship from these popular films to create
a new plot -- a distinguished Hollywood awards show in which memorable
silver-screen Disney moments are recognized.
Guests approach the 977-seat theater along a red carpet, complete
with paparazzi, a roving reporter and live "celebrity"
interviews broadcast on giant video screens inside the theater.
A glamorous and glitzy opening number leads way to the first of
three celebrity guest appearances -- including ones by Roy E. Disney
(nephew of Walt Disney) and Angela Lansbury (voice of Mrs. Potts,
Beauty And The Beast -- who appear via "ship-to-shore transmission."
Throughout the show, a wide variety of popular Disney character
performances distinguishes The Golden Mickeys from most musicals.
The Golden Mickeys was created through a collaboration between
Disney Cruise Line and Disney Creative Entertainment, based in Burbank,
Calif. Diane Paulus, a well-known musical theatre and opera director,
directed the show. Paulus is currently the director of The Donkey
Show, which is in its fifth year running in New York City and has
toured internationally to London, Edinburgh, France and Madrid.
The production team included Maria Torres (choreographer), Myung
Hee Cho (set designer), Mariann Verheyen (costume designer) and
Matt Frye (lighting designer).
The Golden Mickeys opened Labor Day weekend (2003) aboard the Disney
Wonder and is scheduled to debut aboard the Disney Magic in December.
