Whether it’s sharing folklore around an outdoor fire pit, donning
tribal clothing or crafting animal puppets, youngsters will be immersed
in African culture at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. A variety of
kid-friendly enrichment programs are offered through the day at
the newest Disney resort.
Did you know an ostrich egg is strong enough to hold a child? Or
that a giraffe’s neck has the same number of bones as a human’s
-- just bigger? Such stories will unfold as the resort’s savannah
curators and guides help younger guests understand animal behavior
during daily sessions at Arusha Rock kopje just off the hotel lobby.
Children also will have an opportunity to interact with cultural
representatives from Africa who share stories about the culture,
art and cuisine of their homeland. Cultural representatives also
will reveal how animals impact their culture.
And while parents head to Jiko-The Cooking Place for dinner, the
kids can retreat to Simba’s Cubhouse for an evening of discovery
and fun. At this activity center they can make a mural or chalk
art inspired by African artwork, craft beaded necklaces or participate
in an animal enrichment program. Simba’s Cubhouse is open daily
from 4:30 p.m. to midnight. The cost is $8 per hour, per child ages
4-12.
Who’s that parading through the lobby? As savory South African
sensations waft into the lobby, cultural representatives signal
the dinner hour with traditional songs, and parade guests to the
various dining venues.
Other activities for children include:
- Mask painting alongside an authentic artisan carving animal figurines
and wood sculptures
- Junior chef-of-the-day program at Boma-Flavors of Africa
